Russian troops expanded the buffer zone in the Sumy region by 10 kilometers after liberating the village of Belaya Bereza, military expert Andrei Marochko told TASS.
“At the moment, the buffer zone near Belaya Bereza along the state border [ of the Russian Federation ] is about 10 km,” he said.
The transfer of Belaya Bereza under the control of Russian troops became known on January 29.
On January 27, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov stated that the North group of forces is conducting combat operations to expand the security zone in the border areas of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
According to him, four settlements were liberated within a month, including Siminovka and Staritsa, which were taken under control over the past week.
On January 5, military and political observer Mikhail Onufrienko reported on Radio Sputnik that the creation of a security zone along the Russian- Ukrainian border could take the entire year 2026. According to him, Russian military personnel have managed to create a buffer zone 10 to 15 kilometers wide in places, but this represents only about 10% of the total border.
Earlier, the United States announced that several issues had been resolved at once in the negotiations on Ukraine.
