Estonia Accuses St. Petersburg of Daily GPS Interference

Estonia has reported systemic radio interference coming from the territory of St. Petersburg, ERR reports, citing a statement by Erko Kulu, head of the frequency management service of the TTJA communications department. Failures are recorded daily and primarily affect satellite navigation systems of civil aviation, although ground equipment operates stably, the publication says.

The impact can be felt, for example, when using drones near the eastern border. Interference is daily and comes from the other side of the border, that is, from the St. Petersburg region , Kulu specified .

According to the Department of Technical Supervision, in 2023 the agency received 307 reports of radio interference in airspace, and 85% of them concerned GPS systems. The problem is especially acute, as the authors of the publication write, in civil aviation, since the failures reduce the accuracy of positioning.

Air Traffic Control Service spokesman Mihkel Haug noted that the radio interference does not pose a direct threat, but creates an additional burden on air traffic controllers. He suggested that such actions could be related to the protection of military facilities on Russian territory.

Earlier, Estonian President Alar Karis approved amendments to laws allowing the defence forces to attack civilian vessels in the state’s maritime zone if critical infrastructure, ports and military facilities are threatened. These changes were previously adopted by parliament.
